While Taiju proudly brings back a basket of plants and mushrooms picked at random, Senku sorts through the contents in seconds: “Destroying angel, poisonous. Shimeji, edible. Fly agaric, poisonous. Mugwort, edible. Aconite, you trying to kill someone, idiot?” Played for laughs, this scene actually lays bare one of the slowest skills to acquire in any pre-industrial civilization: knowing how to eat without poisoning yourself.

Three universal identification rules
Serious mycological and botanical identification rests on three principles [Web] .

Strict identification, never approximate. A mushroom is never identified by overall resemblance (“looks like a porcini”), but by several independent criteria that must all converge: gill color, presence of a ring, stem shape, spore print (the color of spores deposited on white paper), fresh smell, ecology (which tree, which soil). Miss a single criterion, and you don’t eat it.

Progressive dosing. Even a well-identified edible species can trigger an individual reaction. The ancestral rule is to taste a small amount (10 to 20 g) the first time, then wait 24 hours to observe personal tolerance.

A familiar chain. You learn to identify the species of your own region, in their usual growing environment, and stick to that known list. Expanding it requires expert supervision.
Taiju’s basket, item by item
The scene’s inventory offers a rich sample:
- Destroying angel (Amanita virosa), deadly through α-amanitin. 50 g of fresh flesh is enough to kill an adult. No specific antidote, mortality of 20 to 50% without a liver transplant.
- Fly agaric (Amanita muscaria), poisonous but rarely fatal in adults. Toxins include muscarine, muscimol, ibotenic acid. Causes hallucinations, digestive upset, occasionally coma.
- Shimeji (Hypsizygus marmoreus), edible and widely cultivated in Japan. Mild flavor, firm texture, one of the most-eaten mushrooms in Japanese cooking.
- Mugwort (Artemisia sp.), edible and medicinal. Several species (vulgaris, absinthium, annua). Bitter volatile compounds, used as a seasoning and in pharmacopeia (artemisinin from A. annua against malaria, Nobel Prize 2015).
- Aconite (Aconitum sp.), extremely toxic through aconitine. 2 to 6 mg of pure alkaloid (a fraction of a root) is enough for an adult. Transdermal absorption is possible.
- Wild grape (Vitis sp.), edible. More sour and smaller than cultivated grapes, but harmless.
