Sorting quickly through Taiju’s basket, Senku spots the aconite and blurts out, alarmed: “Aconite. You trying to kill someone, idiot?” A reaction that could pass for a joke but covers a precise toxicological reality: bringing back an aconite root in a foraging basket means bringing back enough to kill several people.

One plant, several poisons throughout history

The genus Aconitum groups around 250 species of perennial plants in the buttercup family, spread across the temperate and mountainous regions of the northern hemisphere. The best-known species are Aconitum napellus in Europe (monkshood, or “Jupiter’s helmet”), Aconitum carmichaelii in East Asia, and Aconitum lycoctonum in the Alps (wolfsbane) [Wikipedia] .

All contain a family of diterpenoid alkaloids, the most active of which is aconitine . A single root of Aconitum napellus can hold 5 to 10 mg of pure aconitine, while the human lethal dose sits between 2 and 6 mg. In other words, one root can kill several people.

The molecular mechanism

Aconitine binds to voltage-gated sodium channels and locks them open. Normally, these channels open briefly, for a few milliseconds, letting a current of Na⁺ through that depolarizes the membrane and propagates an action potential, then close again. Aconitine prevents that closure: the channel stays open, sodium keeps flooding in, the membrane stays depolarized.

The consequences cascade. In sensory nerves: continuous discharge, tingling, burning, diffuse pain. In motor nerves: initial excitation followed by paralysis through exhaustion. In the heart: ventricular tachycardia, fibrillation, arrest. In the respiratory muscles: progressive paralysis of the diaphragm. Death typically follows from cardiorespiratory arrest within 2 to 6 hours without treatment [Web] .

No specific antidote

Treatment relies on hemodynamic support (atropine for bradycardia, antiarrhythmics such as lidocaine or amiodarone), mechanical ventilation once respiratory paralysis sets in, and gut decontamination within the first hour (activated charcoal). No antibody or specific inhibitor of aconitine exists in clinical practice.

Transdermal absorption deserves a mention. On intact skin, the risk is low. But on a wound, a scrape, or skin left damp and exposed to the sap for a while, aconitine can be enough to cause systemic poisoning. That’s one reason professional gardeners handle aconites with gloves.
