Could Heliocentrism Be Proven in the 15th Century?
The claim
In Orb: On the Movements of the Earth, a disillusioned Hubert concludes that "heliocentrism can never be proven. There are too many uncertain factors." Was he right? Was the theory truly unprovable, and did it stay that way?

What the real science says
For his era, Hubert’s verdict is correct. Heliocentrism predicts an observable effect: annual parallax. If the Earth travels along an orbit, a nearby star should appear to sway slightly over the year against the distant stars. Yet, to the naked eye, nobody detected any such sway.
Two conclusions were possible: either the Earth does not move, or the stars are so far away that the parallax is too small to see. The second is the right one, but it was unverifiable: the required precision was far beyond what instruments allowed, even the best of them (Tycho Brahe, at 1 arcminute, still could not see anything). No direct proof was within reach in the 15th century.
Proof did come in the end, in three steps:
- 1727: James Bradley discovers the aberration of light, a tiny shift in the apparent direction of every star, caused by the Earth’s motion along its orbit. It is the first observational proof of orbital motion, a century before parallax.
- 1838: Friedrich Bessel finally measures the parallax of the star 61 Cygni, the long-awaited direct proof. The star does sway, by a minuscule angle, because we orbit the Sun.
- 1851: Foucault’s pendulum mechanically demonstrates the Earth’s rotation on its axis, in plain sight at the Panthéon in Paris.
Why Orb has Hubert say “never”
Hubert could not have known, and that is the whole tragic point of his line: he was right that he would never prove it, but wrong to turn that into an eternal impossibility. After him, science simply needed more than two additional centuries of instruments for the first proof, and one more for the long-sought parallax.
The story’s diagnosis remains remarkably sound for its time: heliocentrism truly was unprovable in the 15th century, for want of measuring such minuscule effects. The only falsehood is the word “never”. A sound intuition, centuries ahead of its proofs.
